The ERC/NSM has a program for qualified international engineering students for spending some time at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
During the last 10 years more than 200 students from Europe and Asia have participated in this program and completed a thesis (Diplomarbeit for German students and
Masters Thesis for others) at the ERC/NSM. This thesis is written in English on a topic related to the R&D activities of the ERC/NSM and it is recognized by the student’s home institution. Thus, the
student improves his/her English, learns about the Midwestern US culture, and conducts an industrially relevant research project that is acceptable to his/her advisor in his/her home country.
We encourage students with interest and background in design and manufacturing engineering to visit our web site: http://www.ercnsm.org
The typical procedure for participating in ERC/NSM’s Visiting Scholars Program is as follows:
1-The interested student sends an e mail inquiry or application (with information on his/her background, i.e. resume, practical experience if any, list of courses taken, etc.) to the
ERC/NSM. A minimum stay of 7 months, including 2 weeks vacation, are required to complete a satisfactory thesis. It may be possible to stay longer upon special agreement.
2- The background and qualifications of the student are evaluated. If this evaluation is favorable, we send a letter indicating this decision and requiring that the student obtains
approval for this visit from his/her present advisor. At this stage it is also possible to outline a preliminary thesis (Diplomarbeit) topic that is also acceptable to the student’s current advisor.
3- We can provide partial financial support, about $500/month. The student is expected to have additional funds from personal or other sources. Approximately $1000 to $1200 per
month are needed to have a student style living standard in Columbus.
4- We send to the student information necessary for a visa application. Usually, this is: -the Part B- Form IAP-66.
This
form is completed and returned to us. The information in this form is needed so that we can complete the paperwork and send the student a formal invitation with appropriate forms needed to obtain a visa. Obtaining a
visa for this program is relatively simple and takes a few days, after the student has the formal invitation from ERC/NSM.
